Antique Hymn Board

19th century
Description

A charming antique oak church hymn board retaining its original character and painted “HYMNS” lettering to the top. The tall board has a shaped architectural top with pierced trefoil detail, above a series of horizontal wooden rails designed to hold hymn numbers. Raised on a simple projecting plinth base.

Accompanied by a wooden storage box containing a collection of associated hymn numbers. A particularly characterful piece of ecclesiastical furniture with a lovely aged colour and surface.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition with wear, marks, scratches and general signs of age and use throughout. There is a rectangular area beneath the HYMNS lettering where a plaque or label has previously been removed, leaving a visible difference in colour. Evidence of historic woodworm to the accompanying number box, which has been treated. General age-related wear to both the board and box, but the hymn board remains solid and sound overall.

Hymn boards were functional church fixtures mounted in prominent positions within a nave or sanctuary. They were designed to display the numerical sequence of hymns during a service using interchangeable wooden or card tiles.

Most British examples from the nineteenth century were constructed from solid oak, pitch pine, or mahogany. Component elements often included brass fittings, slotted timber ledges, and hand-carved Gothic decorative motifs.
