Marlborough Antiques & Interiors has dated this French Marble Side Table to the 1880s.

The table is surmounted by a substantial shaped and moulded marble top, displaying an appealing natural mixture of soft pink, cream and grey tones. Beneath is a single frieze drawer, discreetly incorporated into the design and retaining its decorative handle.

The finely carved base is especially pleasing, with panelled legs enriched with delicate floral and foliate ornament and pronounced architectural mouldings. The four legs are united by an unusually decorative serpentine shaped stretcher, centred by a boldly carved shell and scrolling motif, giving the table considerable presence when viewed from any angle.

The timber has been sensitively lightened to reveal the quality of the carving and construction, while allowing the beautifully figured marble to provide a subtle contrast.
Dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880, this is a decorative and highly usable piece of French furniture. Its relatively compact proportions make it particularly suitable as a hall, side, centre or occasional table, equally at home in a traditional interior or used as a statement antique within a more contemporary setting.
