19th Century French Oak and Fruitwood Oval Dining Table

19th century
Description

This is a great looking 19th century French oval dining table. The base is made from oak and the top looks to be a type of fruitwood. Whats nice about this table is its size. Great depth offering plenty of space for sitters to dine. The top has a wonderful tactile patina and overall condition is good. No structural issues, minor splits between the planks of the top and of course the obvious lack of drawer. Within the price we can put a piece of timber in to hide the whole or for a small additional cost we can look to put in a sympathetically matched drawer. Just let us know what you would prefer.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French provincial dining tables from the 19th century were crafted for regional households, prioritising utilitarian functionality and native timber construction. They typically feature simple lines, frieze drawers for storing utensils or linens, and tapered or turned legs.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised native hardwoods such as oak, fruitwood (cherry, pear, or apple), walnut, and chestnut. Joinery typically relied on traditional mortise and tenon construction secured with wooden pegs rather than metal fixings.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut joinery, and irregular surface wear consistent with age. Inspecting the undersides and drawer linings reveals unrefined timber, hand-hammered hardware, and wooden dowels.

Combine the timber table with contemporary dining chairs, such as minimalist metal or upholstered seating, to create a balanced material contrast. Pair with simple ceramic tableware and natural linen textiles to complement the warm wood tones.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Protect the surface from direct heat, moisture, and prolonged sunlight exposure using mats and trivets.
