19th-century Cast-iron Signal Cannon on Oak Carriage

19th century
Description

A decorative 19th-century cast-iron signal cannon mounted upon a strongly constructed oak carriage. The substantial barrel features moulded bands, a flared muzzle and rounded cascabel, secured by iron trunnion caps and square-headed bolts.

The stepped wooden carriage is raised on four solid wheels with metal securing pins and retains a rich, aged patina throughout. An unusual display piece for a library, study or entrance hall.

The cannon appears to have been blocked and is sold strictly as a decorative antique. It has not been tested.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A signal cannon is a small-scale artillery piece designed primarily to make a loud noise rather than fire projectiles. Historically used on marine vessels, naval bases, and private estates, they served to signal arrival or departure, raise alarms, mark time, or perform ceremonial salutes.

The barrels of signal cannons were typically cast from iron, bronze, or brass to withstand repeated gunpowder charges. Carriages were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, teak, or mahogany, held together with iron fittings and mounted on solid wooden truck wheels.

Authentic nineteenth-century signal cannons display period manufacturing characteristics, such as slight irregularities in the iron casting, original touchholes or vent holes, and heavy iron trunnions. Carriages often show hand-cut joinery, historic iron capsquares, and age-consistent patination on both wood and metal.

A signal cannon serves as an architectural object when styled on a library desk, bookshelf, or fireplace mantelpiece. Its dark iron patination and wood tones pair well with leather bindings, natural timber accents, and classic maritime or academic themes.

Cast iron should be kept in a dry environment to prevent rust, with light applications of microcrystalline wax to preserve the dark patina. The oak carriage should be dusted with a soft cloth and occasionally treated with a neutral beeswax polish to prevent the timber from drying out.
