Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the sixteenth century, the gateleg table features hinged leaves supported by leg frames that pivot outwards like gates. This design allowed tables to expand for dining or entertainment while folding down to conserve space in historic homes.

Eighteenth-century examples were typically crafted from solid timbers such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Dense red walnut was frequently favoured during the early Georgian period for its rich colouration and tight grain.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand construction, including hand-sawn wood marks, hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, and wooden peg joinery. The timber often shows uneven wear patterns and oxidisation around the legs and stretchers consistent with centuries of use.

A gateleg table functions well as a flexible dining option in compact spaces or as a hallway console with one leaf lowered. Placing modern ceramic lamps or framed artwork on the surface creates an appealing contrast against the dark timber.

Preserve walnut furniture by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a coat of beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and uneven fading.
