Early 20th Century Industrial Wooden Shoe Trolley Sr21

1900 - 1920
Description

An original early 20th century industrial wooden stock trolley, retaining four slatted storage shelves within a robust timber frame.

Constructed for everyday commercial use, the trolley displays an honest, utilitarian design with exposed mortise and tenon joinery, substantial timber uprights and diagonal corner bracing, reflecting the practical craftsmanship of the period. The open slatted shelves would have provided a durable and well-ventilated surface for storing and transporting stock throughout a factory, workshop or warehouse.

The richly worn timber has developed a wonderful industrial patina through decades of use, with remnants of its original black painted finish still visible across the slatted shelves. Its authentic surface and simple architectural form make it an excellent decorative and functional piece, equally suited to retail interiors, loft spaces or industrial collections.

The trolley is fitted with later swivel castors, allowing it to be moved with ease while preserving its original character.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Industrial wooden shoe trolleys were functional mobile storage units used in 19th and early 20th-century footwear factories to transport shoes between manufacturing stages. Constructed with multi-tiered slatted shelves on castors, they offered ventilated, efficient movement of goods across factory floors.

These factory racks were predominantly constructed from dense softwoods or hardwoods such as pine and beech, reinforced with iron or steel brackets. Cast-iron or metal swivel castors were attached to the base to enable smooth mobility under heavy loads.

Authentic industrial trolleys feature natural wear patterns, stencil markings, factory serial numbers, and iron castors showing operational patina. Structural elements often display traditional joinery alongside heavy utility bolts rather than modern screws.

In contemporary spaces, these units serve as open bookcases, kitchen storage racks, or hallway footwear organisers. The slatted shelves and warm wood tones contrast effectively with minimalist concrete, exposed brickwork, or painted plastered walls.

Clean timber surfaces using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth to avoid stripping original finish. Apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the wood from moisture, and lubricate metal castors with light machine oil if necessary.
