Royal Worcester Late Victorian Pair of Figural Salts, 1882

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An attractive pair of antique late Victorian Royal Worcester porcelain figural salts, produced in Worcester, England, in 1882. Modelled in the distinctive James Hadley style, the companion figures portray a young gentleman wearing a tricorn hat and a lady in eighteenth-century costume standing beside hollowed tree trunks. Designed with both decorative and practical intent, the open trunks served either as master salt cellars for the dining table or as spill holders for wooden tapers used to light candles, lamps and pipes.

Royal Worcester combined fine porcelain body, careful hand finishing and multiple enamel firings to produce table wares of exceptional quality. Pieces of this type were made in comparatively limited numbers and reflected the growing Victorian taste for functional objects executed as decorative sculptures.

Both figures are finished in muted overglaze sage green and soft ivory enamel pigments, creating the refined colour palette for which Royal Worcester became renowned during the late nineteenth century. The undersides retain authentic green printed Royal Worcester factory marks, while the date code T for 1882 is present on one figure.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Figural salt cellars are decorative open salt containers sculpted in the form of human figures, animals, or characters, which were widely produced during 19th-century formal dining service traditions.

Porcelain salts of this period were typically cast from fine soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain and finished with tinted coloured glazes, monochrome glazes, or hand-painted enamel details.

Authentic pieces feature standard printed or impressed factory marks on the base, frequently accompanied by a letter or dot system indicating the precise year of manufacture.

These small decorative items can be placed at the centre of a dining table, displayed inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or arranged atop a sideboard alongside modern tableware.

Porcelain salts should be washed gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, ensuring abrasive materials are avoided to protect the glaze.
