Huge 19th Century Pawn Brokers Trade Sign

19th century
Description

A well weathered, battered, bruised and rather beautiful 19th century hanging pawn broker trade sign.

The wrought iron blacksmith made bracket with various losses to the decoration and retaining some of its original flaky painted finish.

The original balls with exposed copper and lacking the original gilt finish.

Overall in solid condition with apparent wear and tear.

It would likely have originally hung from a fixed bracket. It would now look fantastic hanging from a high ceiling.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The three spheres traditionally associated with pawnbrokers stem from the coat of arms of the Medici family, prominent Italian bankers, and subsequently became the universal commercial symbol for money lending across Europe.

Nineteenth-century trade signs were predominantly fabricated using wrought iron for structural support and scrolling, combined with spun copper, brass, or carved wood for decorative elements like spheres.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-forged joinery, hand-cut rivets, natural surface oxidisation or verdigris on metal components, and structural wear consistent with long-term exposure to weather.

Large architectural trade signs function as graphic wall sculptures when mounted above sideboards, featured on double-height walls, or suspended in entryways.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply microcrystalline wax to wrought iron sections to prevent active corrosion, whilst leaving natural copper patina undisturbed.
