Description:

This is a fine quality antique Victorian stand, of English origin, with a gothic design, constructed from solid pitch pine, ideal for use as a menu stand, book stand or lectern, circa 1860, in excellent original condition. Of Gothic design, it comprises a rotating sloped top, which features an up-stand at the base, which prevents books / menus from falling off the stand. The sloped top is decorated with a triangular dental moulded frieze. The sloped top can accommodate large books or a display menu in a restaurant. The antique Victorian lectern is supported by a substantial ring-turned column pedestal, terminating on reeded splayed legs, with an open quatrefoil-pierced Gothic Revival tripod base. The antique book stand has been cleaned and wax polished to a professional standard in our workshop.

The Victorian reading stand exhibits a mellow pitch pine colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

The antique display table would complement any home or restaurant, and would serve as a decorative display stand for menus or as a book stand.

The antique lectern would certainly grace any home or restaurant; it is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A standing slanted desk or lectern originating in the mid-to-late 19th century, frequently utilised in public establishments, churches, or hotels to display menus, registers, or books.

Mid-Victorian lecterns were commonly constructed from durable softwoods like pitch pine or hardwoods such as oak and mahogany, using mortise and tenon joinery alongside turned pedestal columns.

Authentic period pieces feature the dense, resinous grain characteristic of historic pitch pine, hand-cut joinery marks, uniform age wear along the lip, and Victorian Gothic design elements like cutouts and turned columns.

A freestanding lectern serves as an accent piece in a hallway, foyer, or study, providing a functional platform for displaying open art books, guest registers, or large reference works.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the resin-rich wood grain and maintain its natural patination.
