C16th Italian Marble Urn

A rare 16th Century Renaissance Carrara marble urn, superbly executed with a vitruvian scroll border separated by carved bunches of grapes and fruits, above a wrythen body featuring classical carved masks (Bacchus, Mercury, Medusa and Cybele) to each side and terminating in acanthus carved base. Circa 1560.

In excellent original condition with only minor weathering and no damage.

This sixteenth century Italian Renaissance Carrara marble urn displays a buff colouration across its rounded form. A carved vitruvian scroll border runs beneath the rim, flanked on the sides by carved bunches of grapes and fruit clusters. The exterior shows diagonal fluting enclosing a classical mascaron relief face motif above an acanthus carved base. Minor weathering marks the surfaces of the stone, alongside natural tone variations and tool marks from carving. Measuring 28 cm high, 48.5 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, the vessel works well displayed upon a sideboard top within a sunlit conservatory or living space, holding floral arrangements or standing empty as a decorative sculptural accent.
