Antique Zulu Knobkerrie Throwing Club, Circa 1900.
A very fine and unusual Zulu knobkerrie (throwing club), expertly hand carved from a single piece of rich, dense hardwood and dating to circa 1900. Distinguished by its exceptional craftsmanship and rare design, this is an impressive example of traditional Zulu weaponry.
The spherical head is particularly noteworthy, featuring an uncommon series of carefully carved concave facets that create a striking geometric form. Executing this level of detail in such dense hardwood would have required considerable skill, patience, and experience, making this an especially desirable example.
Adding further visual interest, the head displays a naturally occurring lighter grained section, creating an attractive two-tone contrast within the timber. Below the head, the shaft is finished with two finely carved raised collars, a subtle decorative feature that enhances the club''s elegant proportions.
Traditionally, knobkerries of this qualit
...y were both practical weapons and symbols of status, and an example of this calibre would likely have been carried by a senior Zulu warrior.
The club remains in original, untouched condition, retaining a superb aged patina and rich colour developed through more than a century of age. Its excellent state of preservation and distinctive form make it an outstanding addition to any collection of African ethnographic art or antique tribal weapons.
