Rare Late 18th Century Solid Fiddleback Sycamore Pembroke Table of Fine Patina

18th century
Description

A rare late 18th century (circa 1790) fiddleback sycamore Pembroke table of fine patina.

This table is extremely unusual being made from solid fiddleback sycamore and also being of slightly larger proportion than normal for this style of table.

The table consists of a solid fiddleback sycamore oval top with intricate banding of boxwood and ebony with outer rosewood crossbanding and a moulded edge.

The two leaves have an unusual added detail to the leaf supports, these having a moulded edge, this feature is most unusual and moves this piece into a ‘fine furniture’ category.

The table having a drawer to one end with ebony cockbead and rosewood, mahogany and boxwood banding with oak linings, the drawer having two fine quality gilt knob handles with replicated dummy drawer to the opposite side, below the drawers a herringbone banding.

To the top of each leg an oval inlaid flower design, possibly that of Lily of the Valley, with intricate banding and a herringbone banding below.

The elegant tapered sycamore legs with fine stringing leading down to diamond banding to the top of the foot all supported on original brass castors.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the 18th century, a Pembroke table is an occasional drop-leaf table designed for light dining, writing, or serving tea, featuring hinged leaves supported by swivelling wooden brackets.

These tables were constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, satinwood, or sycamore, often decorated with inlaid crossbanding, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and brass castors.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, original brass hardware, authentic surface patina, and characteristic timber grains such as fiddleback sycamore or figure-grained mahogany.

Positioned beside a sofa or placed in an alcove with the leaves lowered, a Pembroke table functions as a compact side table or console while adding historical character to modern spaces.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber finish.
