This early nineteenth-century library table is a nineteenth-century William IV piece in the William IV style, attributed to the Dublin maker Williams and Gibton. Made from dark brown well-figured Santos mahogany, the timber displays rich patination and grain with a polished finish. The rectangular top has a moulded edge above a panelled frieze, centred by hand-carved foliage and scroll motifs, with additional carved scrollwork near the corners. The structure is supported by tapered ring-turned end supports with sphere and gadroon details, sitting on shaped platform bases that terminate in fluted scroll feet with brass casters. The piece measures 75 cm high, 153 cm wide, and 67.9 cm deep in overall dimensions. Placed in a gentleman's library, a study, or a grand hallway, it functions well as a freestanding writing or display table while providing a sturdy working surface for daily administrative tasks or decorative arrangements in traditional interiors.

A William IV library table typically dates from the 1830s, characterised by substantial proportions, bold scroll-carved end supports, and fine mahogany construction.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid mahogany and rich flame mahogany veneers, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints and heavy timber framework.

Look for characteristic design elements of the 1830s period, such as heavily carved acanthus leaves, scroll feet, tapered end supports, and maker stamps or stamped serial numbers.

Position the table as a central focal point in an open-plan room, a hall console, or a standalone executive desk paired with a structured modern chair.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent shrinkage, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural wood grain.
