An impressive and finely crafted Greek terracotta Grand Tour vase dating from the mid to late 19th century.

Hand-thrown on a potter's wheel in Greece from mellow terracotta clay, this substantial vase exemplifies the craftsmanship associated with souvenirs produced for affluent Grand Tour travellers. While the clay remained soft, the decorative elements were individually applied using small moulds, creating richly ornamented bands of classical decoration. The relief ornament includes scenes of neoclassical Greek figures together with traditional Greek key (meander), anthemion, and scrolling wave borders.

A particularly appealing feature is the visible fingerprint impressions left by the potter on the interior of the vessel, where the clay was supported during the application of the relief decoration. These authentic marks provide a tangible connection to the artisan who created the piece over 150 years ago.

Produced as high quality mementoes for wealthy European visitors travelling through Greece during the 19th century Grand Tour, this vase remains in excellent original condition. It has developed a beautifully mellow, time aged patina and retains an exceptionally tactile surface.
