This industrial Victorian scientific instrument by Goodbrand & Co originates from Manchester around 1900. The piece comprises a rectangular mahogany board in a warm brown timber tone, mounted with a circular brass-bezeled dial scale marked with black lettering reading GOODBRAND & CO. LTD., MAKERS 19, VICTORIA ST., MANCHESTER, and a scale of 0 to 200 lbs. Additional elements include polished brass vertical rods with turned components, a curved steel lever arm with an open-ended terminal, a metal wheel with a wooden handle, and visible screw hardware securing the fixtures to the timber backing. The apparatus measures 106 cm high by 60 cm wide and 23 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this mechanical scientific instrument functions as a striking wall-mounted decorative focal point in a study, library, or industrial loft interior. The vertical orientation allows it to occupy narrow wall spaces effectively while displaying its complex engineering and materials. The combination of dark wood grain, shining brass components, and raw steel mechanics suits spaces with an aesthetic appreciation for vintage technology and manufacturing heritage.

Historically utilised in textile manufacturing, yarn testers measured the breaking strength, elasticity, and count of spun thread or yarn to ensure consistent quality control across textile mill production.

These precision instruments were typically constructed with solid brass fittings, polished steel levers, and printed dial faces, mounted onto dense timber backboards such as mahogany or oak.

Authentic items feature makers plates or dial inscriptions referencing historical manufacturing hubs, hand-engraved calibrated measurement scales, solid cast brass hardware, and age-consistent metal oxidisation.

Wall-mounted mechanical instruments serve as architectural accents when displayed on narrow wall spaces, within gallery walls, or alongside framed technical drawings in industrial or traditional settings.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that remove natural patination, and condition exposed wood surfaces with natural beeswax.
