Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Hand-driven wooden pegs at the apron joints: framing done before modern fasteners.
Hand-sawn marks across the drawer bottom: early rustic timber preparation.
Shrinkage along the plank joins of the top: natural movement in aged wood.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th-century French provincial walnut table has an oval top and stands on four gun-barrel turned legs linked by a low H-stretcher. The timber displays a warm brown finish with visible grain variations across the surface. There is a secret drawer positioned at one end, and the block feet have been replaced in the past during restoration work. Measuring 112.5 cm in width, 79.5 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height, the table works well in a dining room, kitchen, or living space as a side table, breakfast spot, or centre table. It provides a practical surface for daily dining or display while adding traditional French chateau character to an interior.

French provincial furniture from the 18th century combines the elegant proportions of Parisian styles with durable, functional construction suited for regional chateaux and country homes, typically crafted from solid local hardwoods such as walnut or oak.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised dense native hardwoods like solid walnut, fruitwood, and oak. Construction relied on traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs and reinforced with structural stretchers.

Authentic period pieces display hand-planed surfaces, irregular hand-cut wooden pegs, tool marks on structural undersides, and natural age-related wear or oxidisation around the feet and lower stretchers.

Pair the rich patina of an antique walnut table with contemporary minimalist seating or modern artwork to create visual contrast, placing it as a central feature in a dining space, kitchen, or entrance hall.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent movement in the wood.
