Popularised during the 19th century, these sets feature multiple graduating occasional tables designed to store compactly beneath one another, with the primary table often featuring an inlaid chessboard for parlour gaming.

Victorian nested tables were commonly constructed from ebonised timber, papier-mache, or rosewood, incorporating natural mother-of-pearl inlays, painted lacquer, and gilded foliate accents supported by slender turned spindles.

Authentic pieces feature natural signs of age on structural timber underneath, hand-carved turned spindle supports, genuine mother-of-pearl shell tesserae with slight variation, and minor historic surface wear to the gilding.

Position the set beside a armchair or sofa in a living area, pulling out the graduating lower tables as additional surfaces for drinks or books when entertaining guests.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoid water or chemical solvents, and maintain a stable environment away from direct heat sources to prevent moisture damage or cracking of inlaid materials.
