Antique Pair Italian Art Deco Specimen Marble Pietra Dura Decorative Objects

1900 - 1920
Description

A magnificent and highly unusual pair of antique Italian Art Deco decorative objects, beautifully modelled as monumental obelisks and dating to around 1920. Expertly crafted from polished black marble, each obelisk is richly decorated with exceptional pietra dura specimen stone inlay, creating a striking combination of classical architecture and early twentieth-century Art Deco design.

Each obelisk rises from a substantial stepped plinth and is adorned with intricate geometric panels composed of finely cut hardstones, including lapis lazuli, malachite, jasper, breccia marble, onyx and other colourful specimen stones. The vibrant mosaic-like inlays contrast beautifully against the polished black marble, creating a dramatic visual effect from every angle.

Inspired by the monumental obelisks of Ancient Egypt, these sculptural decorative objects were produced for the finest interiors during the Art Deco period. They beautifully combine the centuries-old Florentine tradition of pietra dura with the clean architectural lines and bold geometric styling that defined luxury Italian design during the 1920s.

Exceptionally versatile, they would make outstanding statement pieces displayed on a grand console table, flanking a fireplace, within a library, entrance hall or luxury interior. Their impressive scale, exceptional craftsmanship and architectural form make them highly sought after by interior designers seeking distinctive decorative objects with timeless appeal.

A rare and impressive pair offering exceptional decorative presence and outstanding craftsmanship.

Condition

Excellent antique condition and a beautiful polished finish. The specimen stone inlays remain vibrant and well preserved, and both obelisks display beautifully.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pietra dura, meaning hard stone in Italian, is an inlay technique using cut and fitted polished stones to create decorative patterns or imagery. During the Art Deco period, craftsmen adapted this traditional Renaissance method into geometric compositions, often set into classical obelisk forms.

These pieces are constructed from a dark marble or limestone structure inset with various specimen marbles and semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, jasper, porphyry, and agate. The individual stone segments are hand-ground and fitted precisely into carved channels.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise, tight-fitting joints between individual stone specimens without wide gaps filled by coloured resin. Natural variation in stone grain, hand-cut stone undersides, and traditional stepped substructures further indicate genuine period craftsmanship.

Positioning a symmetrical pair on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table creates architectural height and visual balance. Their dark frames and geometric marble motifs complement both minimalist contemporary settings and traditional library aesthetics.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent surface scratching from loose particles. Avoid acidic or abrasive chemical cleaners, which degrade marble polish, and apply a neutral stone wax sparingly to preserve the sheen.
