Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A perpetual desk calendar is a mechanical desktop accessory designed in the early twentieth century to display dates without needing replacement each year. Popularised during the Art Deco era, these devices utilized manually rotated mechanical drums or interchangeable cards housed within decorative silver or stone casings.

High-end desk calendars of the 1930s were crafted using sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver, or chrome-plated metal mounted onto hardstone bases such as green onyx, marble, or bakelite. The internal mechanisms relied on printed paper or celluloid date rolls operated by side-mounted turning knobs.

Authentic British sterling silver pieces feature official assay office hallmarks stamped into the metalwork, including a town mark, date letter, and makers mark. Genuine Art Deco period examples show mechanical joinery, natural veining within stone plinths, and era-appropriate typography on date indicators.

An antique calendar serves as a tactile decorative element when placed on an executive office desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. Pairing silver and natural stone accessories alongside modern stationery creates an understated contrast in modern minimalist or traditional library settings.

Clean the silver elements using a soft microfiber cloth and a gentle silver polish, taking care to avoid contact with porous stone elements. The onyx base should be wiped with a damp cloth and dried immediately, avoiding acidic cleaning solutions that could dull the natural stone surface.
