Description

This charmig little trapping was, I suspect, woven to cover the head of the horse and keep flies away.

Made by Qashqa'i nomads in Fars, south-west Persia circa 1900, the trapping is complete with tassels and tie-cords.

Originating from the Qashqa'i nomads in the Fars province of south-west Persia circa 1900, this antique tribal textile comprises a handwoven woolen and cotton trapping designed to adorn a horse. The central band displays a terracotta red ground patterned with white and dark geometric lozenges, bordered by narrow orange and white woven lines. Attached along the lower edge are multiple hanging braided cords finished with multi-coloured woollen tassels in shades of cream, yellow, orange, red, and blue, while longer braided tie-cords extend from each end, terminating in similar tassel clusters. One end of the top band shows slight fraying and loose threads from age. The textile measures 35 cm wide by 0.1 cm high excluding the dangling tassels.
