Kashmiri papier-mache is a traditional craft originating in Kashmir during the 14th century, heavily influenced by Persian artisans. It involves moulding paper pulp into objects which are dried, smoothed, hand-painted with intricate scenes, and sealed with lacquer.

Traditional pieces are created using a base of paper pulp or laminated paper layers mixed with binder materials. Once dried and sanded smooth, the surface is painted using mineral pigments or natural dyes and finished with a clear lacquer coating.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted artwork, often depicting court gatherings, hunting scenes, or dense floral motifs. They typically display subtle surface variations from hand moulding, alongside detailed brushwork and traditional calligraphic or geometric borders.
