Italian majolica, or maiolica, refers to tin-glazed earthenware developed during the Renaissance period. The process involves coating an earthenware vessel in an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide, which serves as a canvas for hand-painted metal oxide decorations before firing.

Majolica figures are traditionally hand-modelled or press-moulded from terra-cotta or white earthenware clay. Once fired into a biscuit state, they are dipped in tin enamel, detailed with metal oxide glazes, and fired a second time at high temperatures to set the colours.

Authentic pieces display a distinct opaque white ground coat beneath colourful glazes, along with minor glaze imperfections or pinholes from the kiln process. The underside often reveals unglazed earthenware clay, firing marks, or painted maker stamps.
