Rare Scholars / Prayer Board, Islamic Script, Mali, C1800

19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Rare and interesting African late 18th /early 19th century scholars or prayer board from Mali,c1800. The wooden panel has been hand carved and shaped and both sides feature extensive Islamic script. On one side there is a star or pentangle a symbol with significance in Islam. Mali and in particular Timbuktu was a centre for scholarly excellence at a time when many historians believe Africa was culturally and intellectually ahead of Europe. The board is a good size weighing 1 kg and the wood has taken on great colour/patina after many years of use. It is in very good condition for its age with only very minor fading of the script and just a few knots and imperfections that occur naturally in wood. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view the item or have any queries.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Islamic Quranic writing board, or Alluha, is a hand-carved wooden tablet historically used throughout West Africa and North Africa by students and scholars for learning and memorising the Quran.

These tablets were constructed from local hardwoods and shaped with hand tools. The Arabic inscriptions were rendered using natural charcoal or soot-based ink applied with a reed pen.

Authentic historic tablets feature genuine surface wear, smooth hand-handled edges, natural timber shrinkage, and distinct ink penetration into the grain rather than printed markings.

These tablets are frequently presented on bespoke metal stands within display cabinets, positioned upright on bookshelves, or wall-mounted as sculptural graphic art.

Keep the wood in a dry environment with stable humidity levels, away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and fading of the original ink script.
