“Majolica (pronounced muh-JOL-i-kuh) is a type of porous earthenware pottery that features a brightly colored, opaque glaze, often with rich decorations or three-dimensional, molded designs”

“The technique actually originated in the Middle East and was brought to Italy via the Spanish island of Majorca (then spelled Majolica). Because Italian traders imported this Spanish ware through Majorca, the Italians adopted the word maiolica to describe it”

The planter is hand finished in a mixture of glazed and fired colours with similarities in pattern and design to English majolica. The item has a highly polished finish.

Produced in the early 20th century to a good standard of finish, being ideal to stand a potted plant inside.

This type of pottery was being produced in Italy as was the well known make of Capo De Monte.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian majolica refers to tin-glazed earthenware decorated with vibrant metal oxide glazes. Originating during the Renaissance, these wares frequently feature elaborate relief moulding, classical figures, and bold polychrome glazes.

Majolica planters are crafted from porous earthenware or terracotta clay fired at low temperatures. They receive an opaque white tin glaze background before hand-painted coloured oxide glazes are applied and fired to create a high-gloss finish.

Authentic majolica displays heavy earthenware weight, glaze pooling in carved crevices, and subtle variations from hand painting. Unglazed rim foot rings, makers marks, and natural age crazing on the glaze surface are primary indicators.

A majolica planter serves as a focal accent on a sideboard, console table, or wide window sill. Pairing the urn with simple green foliage allows the rich glazes and sculpted details to stand out without creating visual distraction.

Clean majolica with a soft, damp cloth and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemical solutions. Keep earthenware vessels indoors to protect the porous body and glaze from moisture absorption and frost cracking.
