Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A wakizashi is a traditional Japanese short sword worn by samurai during the feudal era, typically paired with a katana as part of the daisho set. Originating as a secondary weapon for close-quarters combat, it was permitted to be carried indoors and by certain non-samurai classes during specific historical periods.

A traditional wakizashi features a hand-forged steel blade paired with a wooden scabbard coated in protective urushi lacquer. The handle is constructed of carved wood lined with ray skin and tightly bound with silk or cotton braid.

Authenticity is evaluated through blade characteristics, including the visible temper line, hand-forged steel grain, and tang construction. Mountings are examined for traditional hand-carved fittings, authentic rayskin, and genuine lacquered wooden sheaths.

An antique short sword is best displayed on a wooden stand within a glass cabinet, bookshelf, or mantelpiece array. Incorporating it into a curated study or library setting highlights its craftsmanship as a historical focal artefact.

Steel blades require periodic wiping and light application of traditional oil to prevent oxidisation and surface corrosion. Fittings and lacquered scabbards should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and moisture.
