Early 20th Century Red Lacquered Chinoiserie Card or Games Table in the 18thc Style

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th century (circa 1920) red lacquered Chinoiserie card or games table in the early 18th century style.

This table consists of a red lacquered ground with gilt Chinoiserie landscape decoration to the top with gilt border, the front corners of rounded design.

The top opens to reveal a green baize surface with red lacquered edge and guinea wells to each four corners.

The table has a concertina mechanism which enables the table to be extended allowing the table to have a leg to each of the four corners – the concertina or folding frame action was used on the finest tables in the 18th century giving the table greater stability as well as a symmetry which was much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye

This leads down to a decorative frieze to the front and sides consisting of red lacquered ground with gilt Chinoiserie designs.

The table is supported on four cabriole legs with painted scallop shell design to the top with scroll carved decoration to the inner sides of the legs, terminating with ball and claw feet.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home – this can be used as a card or games table or equally as a decorative side table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chinoiserie games table is a piece of occasional furniture decorated with European interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions, featuring hand-painted or lacquered motifs such as landscapes, pagodas, and figures, designed for card playing or decorative display.

Traditional pieces feature a timber framework finished with multiple layers of pigmented lacquer or japanning, embellished with gilded foliage or figures, and supported by carved wooden legs such as cabriole forms.

Authentic examples show signs of age through natural surface crazing, patination on gilding, period-appropriate joinery such as dovetails, and subtle wear around original hinges or leg bases.

Position the table against a neutral wall as a statement side table or fold-out console, pairing it with minimal contemporary lighting or sleek decorative glassware to contrast its ornate gilded detail.

Dust the surface gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the item near direct heat sources or direct sunlight, and refrain from using harsh chemical cleansers or water on lacquer coatings.
