An impressive pair of Royal Dux Bohemia Art Nouveau figures modelled by Hermann Schubert in 1912. The mirrored compositions depict seated maidens beneath spreading trees accompanied by winged putti, with integrated baskets forming part of the sculptural design.
Executed in matte biscuit porcelain with delicate gilding and softly shaded pastel enamels, the pair displays Royal Dux’s finest Art Nouveau treatment, especially in the satin-like drapery that gives the impression of shimmering silk.
The pair most likely forms an allegory of the seasons. The right-hand figure appears to represent Spring and the awakening of nature, while the left-hand figure can be interpreted as Summer. The open basket beside the seated maiden was intended, by the designer’s original concept, to hold flowers, potpourri or fresh berries.
The undersides retain the applied pink triangular Royal Dux Bohemia mark and incised model numbers 2441 and 2442. A moulded signature “H. Schubert” appears to the side
..., identifying Hermann Schubert as the sculptor of the original models.
Hermann Schubert was a renowned German sculptor and professor at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts who collaborated with Royal Dux between 1903 and 1916 as a visiting independent artist, creating original master models later translated into porcelain by the factory.
Original matching pairs from this Royal Dux series are considerably rarer than single surviving figures, and the preservation of both consecutive models together, bearing early Royal Dux marks and Schubert’s signature, makes the pair especially desirable to collectors of Art Nouveau porcelain.
