Antique Yew Wood Oyster Veneer Coffee Table

1920 - 1940
Description

A gorgeous antique yew wood oyster veneer coffee table. It is in the Regency style, this was made in England and dates from around the 1930’s.

The quality is outstanding and this is a great size. The top has beautiful oyster veneers, there is yew wood cross banding and raised pie crust edges. This stands on a fine stretched base with X frame legs.

We have had this revived and re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is some minor wear and patina here and there under the polish, this is full of character and charm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Oyster veneering is a decorative cabinetmaking technique originating in the late 17th century where thin cross-sections of tree branches or small trunks are pieced together to reveal concentric growth rings resembling oyster shells.

Craftsmen traditionally utilise native timber species such as yew, walnut, or laburnum sliced across the grain, applied onto a solid timber substrate, and paired with hand-turned stretchers or shaped X-frame legs for structural stability.

Authentic pieces display subtle irregular timber growth patterns across each veneer segment, hand-cut joinery beneath the frame, and natural surface age marks consistent with historical timber movement.

Position the table centrally on a neutral textured rug to anchor a seating area, offsetting the rich timber figure with contemporary ceramics or glass decorative accessories.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax sparingly along the grain, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting.
