Zhu Mao Ji Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Laughing Buddha Budai Figure 20th C

Description

Chinese porcelain figure depicts the Laughing Buddha, or Budai, seated in a traditional posture. It stands 25 centimeters in height and 24 centimeters in width, with a depth of 13 centimeters and a total weight of 1.7 kilograms. The figure is decorated in a polychrome famille rose enamel palette, featuring a robe adorned with hand-painted floral motifs in shades of pink, yellow, blue, and green over a white glazed ground.

The Buddha is modeled with a wide facial expression, highlighted by red-enameled lips and detailed black eyebrows. He holds a traditional cloth sack in his left hand, and his voluminous robes are further accented with blue-ground borders featuring geometric and scroll patterns. The unglazed base shows a kiln-fired texture and contains an impressed oval maker’s seal. This mark contains the characters for "Zhu Mao Ji Zuo" (Made by the Zhu Mao Company) and identifies the piece as a product of the Jingdezhen workshops.

Famille Rose refers to Chinese porcelain decorated with opaque overglaze enamels, predominantly featuring pink and rose hues, developed during the Qing dynasty. Figures depicting Budai, the laughing monk associated with contentment and abundance, were widely produced in this polychrome ceramic tradition throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

These figures were cast or hand-moulded from high-fired white porcelain clay and covered in a clear glaze. Detailed features and decorative garments were subsequently hand-painted using lead-based overglaze enamel pigments before undergoing a second lower-temperature kiln firing.
