Volkstedt Porcelain Allegorical Candlesticks Summer & Autumn C.1895

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A decorative pair of German porcelain figural candlesticks produced by Volkstedt R. Eckert & Co. around 1895. Executed in the ornate Thüringen rococo revival style, the pair combines allegorical modelling, applied flowers and vividly painted fantasy elements characteristic of fine late 19th-century German porcelain.

The female figure represents Summer or Harvest in the iconography of Ceres, holding wheat, fruit and a torch beside a vividly painted dragon in green and purple enamels. The dragon recalls older European artistic traditions linking Ceres with dragons associated with agriculture and abundance.

The male figure represents Autumn as a Bacchanalian youth with vine leaves, grapes and a pine cone. The fur wrap and wine vessel reinforce the Bacchic symbolism associated with wine and the harvest.

Both figures stand beside flower-encrusted stems supporting rococo-style candle sockets painted in soft pink and pale green with gilt highlights. The delicate pastel palette, elaborate applied flowers and lively rococo revival modelling reflect the highly decorative character associated with late 19th-century Thüringen porcelain.

The undersides bear the underglaze blue crossed-swords type mark corresponding to the R. Eckert & Co. period.

The pair has particularly strong decorative appeal due to the unusual iconography, matched composition and vividly painted dragon, which becomes a major visual focal point within the Summer allegory.

Allegorical porcelain candlesticks are decorative ceramic candle holders that feature sculpted figures personifying abstract concepts, seasons, elements, or classical myths. popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by European manufactories, these functional art objects combined practical lighting elements with narrative sculpture.

German porcelain from this period was crafted using hard-paste porcelain, composed of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. Figures were slip-cast in press moulds, hand-assembled with liquid clay, kiln-fired at high temperatures, and subsequently decorated with overglaze enamel paints and gilt accents.

Authentic Volkstedt porcelain usually features underglaze blue factory marks on the base, such as the pitchfork, blue crown, or V monograms used throughout the late nineteenth century. Collectors also examine the quality of the hand-painted detailing, delicate applied floral moulding, and characteristic Rococo scrollwork.

Figural porcelain candlesticks serve as focal accents when displayed in pairs on a mantlepiece, sideboard, or dining table. Placing them alongside minimal modern glassware or framed art creates a deliberate contrast between historic detailing and contemporary lines.

Dust porcelain figures using a soft, dry artists brush to reach small crevices without placing pressure on fragile elements. Avoid water or chemical cleansers on gilded or overglaze painted areas, as moisture can compromise vulnerable repairs or lift gilding.
