Pair of Marble Top Column Pedestals C.1900

Description

Splendid pair of marble top and mahogany column pedestals c.1900. Standing 40" tall. 14¾" (37cm) diameter white marble tops on 12 sided columns veneered in mahogany. With a moulded band around the base and raised on 16" square bases. Marbles are loose (could be glued if preferred), with a Milan address label underneath. Some old marks to the marbles and minor repairs to the veneers. Generally very good condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

This pair of Classical Revival pedestal columns dates from around 1900. Each piece is constructed from mahogany with a dark reddish-brown finish and topped with a loose circular white marble slab. Twelve-sided faceted shafts rise from heavy square plinth bases, united by torus mouldings above the feet. Old marks appear on the marble surfaces alongside minor repairs to the wood veneers, and a Milan address label is affixed underneath. The set stands 101.5 cm high, 40.5 cm wide and 40.5 cm deep. These versatile stands function practically as display surfaces for sculptures, urns or table lamps. Placed in an empty corner or flanking a doorway, they provide architectural height and classical structure within a living room, hallway or study. The combination of dark wood and pale stone introduces a formal, balanced accent suited to traditional or transitional interior schemes.
