Japanese Imperial Satsuma Okimono - Daikoku

Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large most charming Meiji period (1868-1912), Satsuma okimono depicting Daikoku, the God of wealth, good fortune and abbundance, this jovial character is seated upon his huge treasure sack whilst wielding his mallet. The okimono beautifully decorated with vibrant colours in the traditional Imperial palette , these brightly enamelled colours synonymous with Imperial Satsuma decoration of the last quarter of 19th century. The rear of the okimono is signed in a gilt signature by the well recorded artist Gyouzan.

Condition Report :

Original condition with minimal age related wear - Stable firing flaw to the biscuit ground underside.

Satsuma pottery originated in Satsuma province, Japan, gaining international recognition during the Meiji period for its light crackle-glazed earthenware decorated with intricate polychrome enamels and gold accents.

Satsuma okimono are molded or hand-sculpted from yellowish earthenware clay, covered in a fine crackle glaze, and hand-painted with mineral enamel pigments and raised gilding before undergoing multiple firings.

Authentic Satsuma pieces feature characteristic fine glaze crazing, detailed enamelling with relief gilding, and frequently carry painter signatures or the red cross-in-circle Shimazu crest on the underside.
