Description

A Derby porcelain figure of a seated shepherd bagpiper with dog, model 301, size 3, from the 1760s. The figure is seated on a stump with a dog at his side, with low bocage and a pierced rococo base.

This model belongs to the documented Derby seated musician series. Model 301 is a reissue of model 280 without the candle-holder, with related forms including model 307.

The underside bears the incised number “301” and size “3”. The mark corresponds to the early Derby period of circa 1750–1755.

The bagpipe is rendered in a simplified form with a straight terminal instead of the usual flared end, reflecting a reduced and more economical treatment in production and not damage.

A clear and well-defined example of a recognised Derby model, desirable for its attribution and small scale.

Established in the mid-18th century, the Derby porcelain manufactory became renowned for producing soft-paste porcelain figurines, often depicting pastoral themes, musicians, and allegorical figures influenced by continental Meissen prototypes.

Early Derby pieces were crafted from soft-paste porcelain featuring lead-glazed finishes and hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration. Decorative floral bocage backgrounds were individually moulded and attached by hand prior to firing.

Authentic mid-18th century Derby porcelain often features circular patch marks on the underside of the base where the piece rested on pads during firing, alongside unglazed foot rims and distinctive soft-paste porcelain glaze translucency.
