FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used in the dining hall (refectory) for communal meals, traditionally built long and narrow to accommodate many monks.

They are traditionally constructed from heavy, durable timbers such as English oak, featuring thick plank tops supported by trestle bases or sturdy legs connected by a central stretcher bar.

Authentic pieces often display period joinery techniques like pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed surfaces, natural timber shrinkage, and genuine patina accumulated over centuries of use.

Pair the historical piece with minimalist contemporary dining chairs and sleek modern lighting to create a striking contrast between old-world craftsmanship and clean, modern lines.

Maintain the wood by applying natural beeswax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat sources, and always using coasters and placemats to protect the historic surface.
