Royal Worcester Blush Ivory Shell Dish with Gilt Edge and Floral Sprays – 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A Royal Worcester Dish modelled as a large scallop shell. The porcelain is finished in a warm blush ivory tone with softly shaded colour that pools in the moulding. The rim is gently undulating and picked out with fine gilt, giving the piece a lifted, elegant outline.

Hand-painted floral sprays in pinks, blues, and greens are placed within the shell’s interior for a light, refined effect. A small shell-like knop and sculptural shell feet create a raised display form rather than a flat serving plate. Marked for Royal Worcester, dated 1900.

* The shell form gives this piece a naturally theatrical presence even before you notice the painting.

Measurements:

Height: 4" (approx. 10cm)

Width: 8" (approx. 20cm)

Depth: 7 1/2" (approx. 19cm)

Total weight: 370g

In good condition – The dish presents well overall with only light signs of age and handling consistent with a decorative porcelain piece. There are no chips or cracks to the porcelain.

This Late Victorian decorative dish from 1900 takes the form of a large porcelain scallop shell finished in a warm blush ivory tone with soft peach shading that pools within the moulded ridges. The undulating scalloped rim carries a fine gilt edge, while the interior displays hand-painted floral sprays in pinks, blues, and greens. Sculptural shell-shaped feet support the base, and a small shell-like knop rises at the back, all highlighted by light signs of age consistent with handling. Measuring 10 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 19 cm deep, the porcelain sits marked for Royal Worcester underneath. Placed upon a sideboard top within an English Country House interior, this piece serves as a distinctive catchall or display bowl. The raised conch feet and textured shell contours create a theatrical presence on any surface while holding small items or standing alone as a decorative accent. The refined blush palette and delicate enamel flower painting blend easily into traditional living spaces, drawing the eye with both its sculptural form and its hand-decorated surface details.

Blush ivory porcelain is a distinctive finish developed by the Royal Worcester porcelain factory in the late 19th century, characterised by a soft matte ivory body shaded with warm peach or pink tones and decorated with hand-painted floral motifs and gilded accents.

These dishes were cast in porcelain moulds using natural marine forms for structural inspiration, fired to form a vitreous body, and finished with layered enamel glazes, floral transfers or hand painting, and gold leaf highlights applied before a final firing.

Authentic pieces feature the standard Royal Worcester printed factory backstamp, often accompanying a date code system using dots or symbols, alongside impressed shape numbers in the porcelain paste and precise hand-gilding along the edges.

A decorative porcelain shell dish functions well as a accent on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or bedside table to hold small items while adding subtle warm colour and organic form to a contemporary room layout.

Clean gently using a dry, soft brush or a slightly dampened microfiber cloth with lukewarm water, avoiding abrasive scouring pads, detergents, and prolonged soaking, which can cause the delicate gilded rim and glaze to wear away.
