A finely modelled and decorated 19th century Meissen porcelain figure of the so-called “Sleeping Louise” (with a letter tucked into her corset), created by Acier and inspired by a drawing by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, circa 1850.

The figure depicts a young girl asleep in a naturalistic pose, her head resting gently as she reclines, beautifully capturing the softness and intimacy characteristic of Greuze’s subjects. The modelling is delicate and refined, with particularly fine attention to the facial features and hands.

The polychrome decoration is of notably high quality, with subtle flesh tones and carefully observed detail to the drapery, adding depth, warmth and true life to the composition.

The piece reflects the popularity in the 19th century of 18th century French-inspired subjects, interpreted through the precision and craftsmanship for which Meissen is renowned. It is in near perfect condition, with almost imperceptible losses to the veil only. On the base, the Meiisen crossed swords in underglaze, the incised model No. 'E58', impressed '43' and the initial of the anonymous, mysterious painter of the polychromy "S" , in red.

Produced by the Royal Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in Germany, 19th-century Meissen figures frequently drew inspiration from 18th-century Rococo models, classical literature, and popular genre paintings.
