Ritas Bazaar has dated this Japanese Satsuma Earthenware Box to the 19th Century.
The domed cover is superbly hand-painted with a vivid and highly detailed composition of Rakan, or Buddhist sages, each figure rendered with expressive individuality, elaborate halos and finely observed drapery.
This ground is densely enlivened with fine gold stippling, creating a luxurious shimmering surface associated with high-grade Satsuma production of the Meiji era.
The sides are decorated with elegant trailing foliage and stylised ornamental motifs, showing that the artist’s attention was not confined to the lid alone but extended across the entire object. The base bears the iron-red signature of Toshozan (???), linking the box to a respected artistic workshop tradition within Japanese Satsuma ware.
The combination of substantial potting, refined enamel work, richly atmospheric colour and strong figural decoration gives this box real visual authority. It is both a distinguished collector’s object and an impressive display piece, equally suited to a serious collection of Japanese Meiji ceramics or to an interior where quality Asian works of art are appreciated.
