Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A prie-dieu is a specialized piece of devotional furniture created for private prayer, featuring a slanted surface to hold a book or arms and a low platform for kneeling. During the 18th century Chippendale period, cabinetmakers incorporated characteristic carved details, pierced fretwork, and refined proportions into these pieces.

Chippendale period devotional furniture was predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as Cuban mahogany. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques, including mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails, and pierced fretwork detailing.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved decorative elements, historical hand-tool marks on unpolished surfaces, and natural oxidisation within the timber grain. Look for period-appropriate joinery techniques, unrefined undersides, and genuine wear across the footboard and book rest.

An antique prie-dieu serves as an architectural accent piece in a study, library, or hallway. It can function as an occasional reading stand, display surface for open art books, or a standalone sculptural object in an empty corner.

Maintain mahogany antiques by keeping them in stable atmospheric conditions away from direct heat sources and sunlight. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually to nourish the wood and preserve the original surface patina.
