Gilt Wood Framed Decorative Fan with Pastoral Musical Scene

19th century
Description

Late 19th century decorative fan mounted within a semicircular gilt wood frame and pedestal stand, conceived as a freestanding tabletop ornament. The carved and gilt frame follows the arc of the fan and features a beaded inner molding and molded outer border, supported by a turned pedestal stem rising from a circular base decorated with stylized foliate ornament. The presentation transforms the fan into a sculptural display piece suitable for a mantel, console, or sideboard.

The fan leaf is decorated with a finely painted polychrome pastoral scene depicting four figures in romanticized 18th-century costume gathered around a harpist in a garden setting. A standing woman plays the harp at center while a seated gentleman appears to hold sheet music beside her. To the left a woman in a flowing pink gown gestures toward the musician, while to the right a gentleman approaches holding his hat. The composition is further enhanced with gilt highlights and delicate garlands of stylized floral ornament arranged along the upper portion of the fan.

The leaf is supported by carved and pierced bone stems, visible along the lower edge, which form the structural framework of the fan. The reverse reveals the underlying construction of the fan and shows age-related toning and wear. The fan is secured within the frame by small metal supports along the lower edge.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Folding fans became prominent luxury items in 17th and 18th-century Europe, often imported from Asia or crafted locally in France and Italy. As delicate fashion accessories, high-status fans featuring painted classical or pastoral scenes were frequently mounted into custom glazed frames for preservation and tabletop display.

Traditional folding fans were constructed using leaves made of painted silk, vellum, paper, or lace, often decorated with sequins and metallic thread. The supporting sticks and guards were typically carved from bone, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, or wood, while custom display cases utilised carved giltwood and glass.

Authentic period fans display hand-painted brushwork rather than printed patterns, accompanied by fine hand-carved or pierced sticks. Signs of age include faint surface patination, natural oxidisation on metallic embroidery or gilding, and minor wear near the leaf folds and pivot rivet.

Position a tabletop fan display on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or piano top alongside minimalist or complementary antique accents. The detailed artwork and metallic frame provide texture, historical contrast, and a focal point within modern or traditional decor schemes.

Keep glazed fan displays away from direct sunlight, heating sources, and humid environments to prevent silk degradation and wood warping. Dust the external giltwood frame lightly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners that could damage the gilding.
