C. 1850, Rockingham Pottery, Staffordshire, Treacle Glazed Medici Lion on Stepped Base (English).

Based on the early classical marble original from the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence.

CONDITION:

Wear commensurate with age. A very minor chip to base at front (as shown).

PROVENANCE:

From the Collection of Nigell and Heather D’Oyly. Nigell and Heather have been passionate collectors throughout their married life. The core of their collection was inherited from the J W French side of Nigell’s family, who were prosperous flour millers based in Bow, Chelsea and Ware. Their notable relatives include Sir Charles D’Oyly, 7th Baronet (1781-1845), an accomplished watercolorist based in Calcutta, and Sir John D’Oyly, 1st Baronet of Kandy, Ceylon (1774-1824).

The design originates from the 16th-century marble sculptures commissioned by the Medici family in Rome, featuring a lion standing with one paw resting on a sphere. English potteries in the 19th century adapted this classical motif for lead-glazed and treacle-glazed earthenwares.

Treacle glaze, closely associated with Rockingham and Yorkshire potteries, was created using a lead-based glaze rich in iron oxide or manganese. When fired, the glaze melted and ran down the piece, creating mottled shades of deep brown, amber, and honey.

Authentic pieces feature pooling of glaze in recessed details, heavy earthenware bodies, and unglazed or lightly glazed bases showing age-appropriate wear. Later reproductions often lack the subtle tonal variations and depth of 19th-century lead glazes.
