This vintage table lamp dates from the 1900 period in the Art Nouveau style. It is made from spelter with a dark bronze finish and a cream fabric shade. The piece comprises a slender column with organic fluting on a flared base, paired with a pyramidal shade emitting a warm yellow glow. Three visible details are the flared base, the organic fluting, and the cream fabric of the shade. The lamp measures 48 cm high and 36 cm wide. Position this piece on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study to provide functional illumination and period character. The dark metal stand contrasts with the lighter shade to create a balanced focal point on a flat surface.

FAQs

Art Nouveau lighting is characterised by organic forms, flowing curvilinear lines, and motifs inspired by flora and nature. Originating in the late nineteenth century, these pieces often feature sculpted metal bases resembling plant stems or biological structures.

Spelter is a zinc-based alloy commonly used from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries as an economical alternative to bronze. It was cast into intricate molds and finished with paint, lacquer, or patination to mimic bronze or brass.

Authentic spelter lamps typically feature soft organic lines, fine casting detail, and noticeable weight without being as heavy as solid bronze. Checking for mold seam marks, age-appropriate wiring, and original surface patination helps confirm period authenticity.

Position the lamp on a modern sideboard, desk, or bedside table to create a focal point with warm ambient lighting. Contrast its organic sculpted silhouette against crisp contemporary walls or minimalist wooden surfaces.

Dust the metal base gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or liquid polishes that could strip the original surface finish. Ensure all electrical wiring is inspected by a qualified electrician prior to use.
