Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Writing Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderful antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany writing table / desk. This was made in England, it dates from the 1900-1910 period.

It has a fantastic design and is of superb quality. The break fronted top has a pierced brass gallery, it stands on tapered legs terminating in brass casters. The mahogany has beautiful satin wood inlays throughout and top quality brass handles on the drawers. The central drawer opens normally, the two drawers either side open on hinges and contain divided compartments for letters and stationary. There is even an original glass inkwell inside one drawer. There is an inset gold tooled green leather writing surface which compliments the mahogany beautifully.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian writing tables, crafted during the early 20th century, frequently feature slender profiles inspired by 18th-century Sheraton designs, incorporating fine satinwood inlays, delicate legs, and functional leather writing surfaces.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, accentuating the framework with satinwood or boxwood crossbanding, brass hardware, brass gallery rails, and gold-tooled leather inserts.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, precise geometric stringing or crossbanding, original brass castors, and period brass drop handles.

These compact tables serve as versatile home office desks, elegant hallway consoles, or slim accent writing surfaces positioned behind a sofa or within a alcove.

Dust timber regularly with a soft cloth, apply beeswax along the wood grain, and protect the leather inset from direct sunlight and excess humidity to prevent drying or cracking.
