Antique French Inlaid Walnut Ormolu Mounted Writing Table

19th century
Description

An absolutely stunning and early antique French inlaid walnut ormolu mounted desk / writing table. This dates from around the 1800-1820 period.

It is of exceptionally fine quality, this is really quite a special piece. It is predominantly walnut, there is incredibly fine inlay of satin wood throughout. The borders have extremely fine and intricate patterns, and on each of the four top corners there is a unique inlaid floral image. There are even finely detailed inlaid patterns that run down each leg.

The gilt bronze ormolu mounts are also of incredibly high quality, they are seen all over this desk, and on the front, back and sides they hold in place beautiful hand painted porcelain plaques, which are probably Sevres.

There are two drawers in the front, the back of this has no drawers but is finished in an identical fashion, so this can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this recently restored and re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI revival furniture, popular in the mid-to-late 19th century, draws inspiration from 18th-century French neoclassicism, featuring straight geometric lines, tapered square or turned legs, classical motifs, and fine wood marquetry with gilded brass mounts.

These tables typically feature solid hardwood frames veneered with walnut, kingwood, or rosewood, complemented by chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and occasionally inset hand-painted porcelain plaques.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, finely cast and chased gilt-bronze fittings, natural hand-cut wood veneers, and signs of age such as gentle surface oxidisation on metalwork and subtle wood shrinkage.

A French writing table serves as a focal point in a home office, hallway, or living room, paired with minimalist seating or contemporary lighting to highlight the rich timber grain and gilded accents.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and nourish wood surfaces with natural beeswax, avoiding water, harsh detergents, or metal polishes that can degrade the original finish and tarnish gilt bronze.
