The Form and Glaze

It is finished in a luminous Qingbai (bluish-white) glaze of icy translucency. Exterior: The exterior is expertly incised with a fluid, continuous scene of a phoenix (Fenghuang) in flight. The mythical bird is depicted with a long, scrolling tail and outstretched wings, navigating through lush peony blossoms and scrolling foliage.

Interior: The interior center is decorated in matching low-relief, featuring dense floral sprays that radiate toward the rim, emphasizing the bowl's wide, shallow proportions.

Condition and Reverse

The rim is unglazed, consistent with the traditional "inverted firing" technique used in Jingdezhen kilns. Qingbai porcelain, also known as Yingqing, is a type of Chinese ceramic characterised by a translucent pale blue or greenish-blue glaze applied over a refined white porcelain body. Originating during the Song Dynasty, particularly around the Jingdezhen kilns, it represents a significant technological advancement in high-fired monochrome ceramics.
