A Large Chinese Qingbai-glazed Conical Bowl with Incised Phoenix and Peony Motifs

1900 - 1920
Description

A Large Chinese Qingbai-Glazed Conical Bowl with Incised Phoenix and Peony Motifs

Republic Period, Early 20th Century

The Form and Glaze

This elegantly potted conical bowl measures 20.1 cm in diameter, featuring steep, flared walls that taper to a short, circular foot rim. It is finished in a luminous Qingbai (bluish-white) glaze of icy translucency. The glaze is thinnest at the rim and pools into the carved recesses of the decoration, creating a delicate contrast of pale aquamarine tones against the white porcelain body.

The Decoration

Exterior: The exterior is expertly incised with a fluid, continuous scene of a phoenix (Fenghuang) in flight. The mythical bird is depicted with a long, scrolling tail and outstretched wings, navigating through lush peony blossoms and scrolling foliage.

Interior: The interior center is decorated in matching low-relief, featuring dense floral sprays that radiate toward the rim, emphasizing the bowl's wide, shallow proportions.

Condition and Reverse

The rim is unglazed, consistent with the traditional "inverted firing" technique used in Jingdezhen kilns. The base shows a characteristic orange-buff paste with visible kiln remnants and a circular foot rim. The piece displays the refined craftsmanship typical of the early 20th-century revival of Song Dynasty aesthetics.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Qingbai porcelain, also known as Yingqing, is a type of Chinese ceramic characterised by a translucent pale blue or greenish-blue glaze applied over a refined white porcelain body. Originating during the Song Dynasty, particularly around the Jingdezhen kilns, it represents a significant technological advancement in high-fired monochrome ceramics.

These bowls were thrown on a potters wheel to create a wide, flared conical shape tapering down to a small foot rim. The decorative motifs, such as phoenixes or peonies, were incised or carved directly into the unfired clay body before a translucent iron-bearing glaze was applied and fired in a reducing atmosphere.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit an unglazed foot rim showing firing marks or iron spots, along with fluid hand-carved decoration where the glaze pools darker in the deeper incisions. Inspection often reveals subtle glaze pooling, surface wear, and fine pinholes characteristic of historical kiln conditions.

Position the bowl on a dark wood stand upon a sideboard, console table, or lit display shelf to highlight the translucency and relief carvings. Its neutral monochrome palette complements minimalist, contemporary, and traditional Asian-inspired interior schemes.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, or ultrasonic cleaners. Ensure the piece is thoroughly dried and displayed away from high-traffic areas or unstable surfaces to prevent accidental damage.
