Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cheese bells became prominent dining accoutrements during the nineteenth century, designed to protect and cover wheels of cheese on the table. Jasperware covers, initially developed by Wedgwood and later manufactured by Staffordshire potteries such as Dudson, featured raised sprigged relief designs against coloured matte stoneware.

Jasperware is a dense, vitreous stoneware recognised for its matte, unglazed surface finish. The contrasting white decorative reliefs, known as sprigging, were separately cast in small moulds from white clay paste and delicately applied to the coloured ceramic body prior to firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display sharp, highly detailed sprigged relief moulding without blurred or thick edges. The underside of the base plate often features impressed maker marks such as Dudson, along with individual batch marks or potter numbers.

Position the piece as a decorative accent on a dining room sideboard, dresser shelf, or kitchen island. Its earthy muted colour palette and tactile relief pattern allow it to integrate into traditional English country interiors as well as contemporary neutral spaces.

Clean gently by hand using warm water and mild soap, utilizing a soft-bristled brush to clear dust from intricate relief recesses. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, dishwashers, or prolonged soaking, which can cause damage to aged ceramic bodies.
