Description

A stunning antique French bisque sculpture by Luca Madrassi (1848–1919). This was made in Paris, it dates from around 1890-1900.

It depicts a gorgeous classical scene, it is a lovely size and has a wonderful patina. The condition is excellent with no real damage to the sculpture. There is just one tiny imperfection to the rear of the base, seen in the images. It could be filled fairly easily, we have left it original for the time being.

Luca Madrassi was an Italian-born French artist best known for his bronze Art Nouveau sculptures of mythological, allegorical, and rustic figures. His work was influenced by the famed French illustrator and sculptor Gustave Doré. Born on June 8, 1848 in Tricesimo, Italy, he went on to study under Pierre-Jules Cavelier at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later worked in the studio of Doré. Madrassi exhibited at the Salon de la Sociéte des Artistes Français from 1879 on, becoming a French citizen in 1890. The artist died in 1919 in Paris, France.

This nineteenth century French figurative sculpture by Luca Madrassi is made from white bisque porcelain with a matte finish. Modelled in a classical style, the figural group depicts a standing woman in classical drapery who holds and embraces two young children. The piece stands upon a tiered circular base with moulded detailing and rests on a surface. It measures 46 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Placed on a mantelpiece in a French chateau interior, the sculpture functions as a decorative accessory. The modelled subjects include the central female figure with hair tied back, draped clothing around her torso and waist, and two children leaning against her with detailed facial expressions and draped garments.

Bisque, or biscuit porcelain, refers to unglazed porcelain that has undergone a single firing, producing a matte finish reminiscent of marble. Popularised in France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was frequently utilised for detailed figurative and sculptural works.

These pieces were crafted using fine kaolin clay poured into detailed multi-part plaster moulds. After casting and drying, the figures were hand-finished to refine details before undergoing high-temperature firing without a protective glaze.

Authentic pieces typically feature crisp facial details, delicate drapery work, and a smooth, velvety matte finish. Look for impressed sculptor signatures, factory marks, or mould numbers along the base or rear of the figure.

Display the sculpture on a dark wood mantelpiece, side console, or open shelving unit to create visual contrast against the matte white surface. It pairs well with minimalist modern backdrops as well as classical interiors.

Dust regularly using a soft, clean brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. To clean stubborn marks, gently apply a damp cloth with mild diluted soap, taking care not to saturate the unglazed surface.
