Antique Victorian Animal Skull Display

A fascinating antique base of a glass dome, decorated with fabric leaves, biscuit (or bisque) flowers roses and a fine moss effect finish, displaying a ram or sheep skull.

The practise to display skulls and bones inside glass domes (glass lost in this example) was part of a broader fascination with natural history, collecting and memento mori.

In the Victorian era it was common to display collections of animal skulls and bones—such as deer, foxes, or sheep—arranged in artistic, often macabre, displays inside glass cloches as part of a "cabinet of curiosity".
