Antique Spindle/water-pipe Bag, Qashqa'i Nomads, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

Description

This charming small woven bag would have originally been used for holding drop-spindles or water-pipes.

Made by Qashqa'i nomads in Fars province, south-west Persia during the early part of the twentieth century, the face contains stylised quadrupeds, possibly deer or gazelle, and one large stylised peacock in soumak weave, symbolising divine immortality and prosperity.

The bag is in excellent, original condition with decorative tufts of wool at the base and its original long, braided cord at the top for hanging the bag in the tent.
