We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Dinner gongs became popular in large British residences during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often imported from East Asia as part of the Western fascination with Orientalist aesthetics, and were used to signal meal times to guests residing in expansive country estates.

Authentic pieces generally feature a resonant disk crafted from cast bronze or brass, suspended by cords or leather straps within a sturdy framework constructed from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patina on the metal disk, hand-forged or turned wooden joinery methods consistent with early 20th-century cabinetry, and natural wear patterns on the wooden striker and frame.

This piece can be placed upon a console table or sideboard as an intriguing sculptural accent, introducing historical depth and contrasting textures to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Dust the wooden framework regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral beeswax periodically to nourish the wood, while the bronze disk should be left unpolished to preserve its natural oxidisation and historical patina.
