Description

This Antique French Oak Winder Easel c1890 is a quintessential piece of "Atelier" (studio) equipment .

While standard easels used simple pegs or notches, a winder (or crank) easel was the premium professional choice, designed to handle the immense weight of large-scale oil canvases.

The handle operates a winding system. This allowed a 19th-century artist to raise or lower a heavy, wet canvas.

French Oak was preferred for studio furniture because of its incredible density and resistance to warping.

The fantastic colour serves as a visual history of the artists who once used the tool and is ready for those who will continue to.

A winder easel uses a mechanical crank and rack-and-pinion gear system to raise and lower heavy canvases with precision. This mechanism became popular in European studios during the late nineteenth century as artists began working on larger scales.

Authentic nineteenth-century studio easels were predominantly constructed from dense, durable hardwoods such as oak, beech, or elm, often fitted with cast iron or brass winding mechanisms and small metal castor wheels for mobility.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut joints, patinated timber surfaces with accumulated paint splatters, heavy cast metal hardware, and functional mechanical winder components characteristic of late Victorian manufacturing.

An antique easel functions well as a focal point in a living room, study, or hallway, serving as a display stand for framed artwork, vintage mirrors, or maps while adding architectural height and textural warmth to a space.

Preservation involves dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood grain. Avoid placing wooden items in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent timber cracking.
